Trees For Seal Beach

Bill Vermeulan help found Trees for Seal Beach with his brother-in-law Jim Caviola back in 1999. Jim had trouble with all the cement in front of his home in Seal Beach. He called the city in order to remove the cement and plant trees and grass along the sidewalk. He offered to pay for it and maintain it. You can guess what happened next - the city rejected his offer and permit.

Jim called Bill and asked him if he could help him get some trees planted and asphalt removed. He explained the situation to Bill and together they approached the city with a comprehensive plan to replace concrete and asphalt with trees and landscape. Trees for Seal Beach was born!

Together Bill and Jim worked tirelessly to help change the face of the city they loved and lived in with their families. Sometimes even getting in trouble for moving stop signs in order to plan trees. Over the last ten-plus years, they have removed thousands of tons of concrete and asphalt and planted over 3600 trees in the city of Seal Beach. They were instumental in helping Seal Beach become the first “Tree City”.

Bob, our key architect also worked on several projects that required a design concept and working drawings to be summitted for city approval. ZoeterField plan to the left is perfect example of Bob’s contribution to the project. This project and all work for Trees for Seal Beach was carried out by Sunset Landscape and Design without profit to Bill or the company. Only hard costs were covered by the organization.

Surfside Colony

Dry Well Installation

Surfside Colony has been a long time client of Sunrise Landscape and Design. We have maintained the property for years and have completed countless renovations to the property.

The property has had a severe flooding problem for many years. The bottom level of the houses were flooding everytime there was a substantial rain. The community had initially thought that 10ft x 3ft french drains were going to handle the problem.

Working with the HOA and a few homeowners (who happened to be engineers), Sunrise was contracted to install a dry well drainage system by Cultec.

Since the system has been installed, they have not had any problems with flooding.

NATIVE PLANTS - Xeriscaping

McMahon Residence

We have worked closely with Bob McMahon for many years and nothing comes closer than a man’s home. The expectations of a Landcape Architect for his own home can be daunting to say the least.

Bob wanted a native landscape with very low water requirements and great curb appeal for his new home in Huntington Beach. Together we worked on the design for the landscape and hardscape - the challenge was to take his ideas on paper and make them a living reality.

Finding all the native species that were required was a great challenge. All the succulents were provided by a close partner and other species were sourced locally.

The primary goals xeriscaping and using native landscape are to reduce water usage and maintenance. Other key benefits are:
- Conserves Water Usage
- Minimal Pest and Disease Problems
- Most Species Thrive with Little or No Fertilization
- Requires Very Little Maintanence/Pruning
- Many Native Species of So. California are Beautiful
- Soil Retains Water and Requires Minimal Irrigation

Another great benefit to this approach is that you can use pots very artistically interwoven with the landscape. By using a variety of pot, wooden wine barrels, rocks and other containers - a unique and sustanable landscape can be created

All of these goals were met on the McMayhon project. Bob and his family are very happy with their new landscape and we are lucky to be able to use their home as example to other clients and prospects.
